Good day,

I'm building a powerful PC at home in France.

I'm a video editor and I'm planning on starting to do 2d and 3d animation with Unreal Engine 5.

I travel for long periods of time a couple of times per year. Which means, my PC has to stay home. But, I still need to work.

I don't want to buy a 2nd PC or an expensive laptop to work abroad. What would be the best remote setup so I can simply connec to my computer at home from wherever I am?

1. What company/software allows me to connect remotely to my computer, without connectivity issues or lagging issues?
2. I don't want to keep my computer on 24/7. Are there ways to remotely turn on and off my computer? It would be expensive now energy-wise to keep a computer on 24/7.

Anyone with any recommendations would be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance.

Well, I tried this a while back there are some things you can do, but it won't be the same kind of experience as working directly on the PC:

- Most PCs have a BIOS option named: Wake on Lan, which can turn a computer on by sending a LAN Packet (magic packet?) to a PC that is off or in suspend and will turn it on. Of course you'll need to disable your Windows Password or logon automatically, then you can connect to it through e.g. Team Viewer
- To even be able to turn on your PC (send that LAN packet) at all, you'll need either a static IP address, or have a router that lets you set this up. Something like an expensive FritzBox or similar should do the trick
- You'll definitely encounter some lag here and there, but since software such as teamviewer does a pretty good job at only sending information that is needed (like a screen refresh or mouse movement update), the lag is minimal in your usual work. It can get more substantial of the entire screen is redrawn, e.g. when viewing animations or moving around the viewport

Cheers,
Alex
